There's No Way I Am Going to Get This Lucky.

So, as many of you saw on my Twitter last week (I'm @hazel318), there is a position at my company that opened up and I'm really interested in it, but my company has a policy that you have to be there a year before transferring positions. Thanks to the encouragement on Twitter from many of you, I sent an email to HR asking if it was even a possibility for me to be considered for the position. That was on Tuesday and when I left for New York, I hadn't heard back yet.

I went to work today and had an email from HR saying that there are exceptions to every rule and that it was a possibility to be considered for the position. And wouldn't you know, the hiring manager is in town this week (he works remotely from Colorado) interviewing for the position. He got wind that I was interested and got very excited and called me today to make sure I was actually interested and to talk about the position. The new position would be very similar to the one I'm in now, so it would work out perfectly for me to transfer because I would require minimal training. I (discreetly) tried to convey my interest without letting everyone else on my team know what I was talking about and the hiring manager said he would discuss it with my boss.

Then, the recruiter from HR emailed me and asked if I would call her on her cell phone after work so we could discuss this more. I did, and we had a good conversation about the position and my interest and she went through the rules and regulations of what the process would be like. She said that unless my manager "releases" me from my current position, I can't go anywhere and they can't do anything about it. Now, there are several reasons why my boss wouldn't allow me to take the new position, BUT I'm hoping that when he said he would support us in our decisions and help us reach professional goals and wouldn't ever stand in the way of opportunities that he meant it and it wasn't a big bunch of bull. I wouldn't put that past him because my co-worker has tried to transfer in the past and he basically said, You can apply, but I doubt you'll get it and she didn't.

So if, and that's a big IF, my boss would let me leave my current department, the Director of HR would still have to approve the move. But, he's aware of the situation so he wouldn't be blindsided by it if my boss does approve.

It sounds like I will know if this will happen or not by the end of the week, so the next few days are going to be torture! I will keep you all posted, but please keep your fingers crossed for me! If I could get this position, I would be 20 times happier with my company, especially since I'll be under a new manager and not my evil, huge ego, nose in the air current boss.

Good for you for deciding to go for this position. Even if things do not work out, you are still better off than if you didn't try at all.

I hope it works out though!

Definitely crossing my fingers for you!!

Is there anyway you can talk to your boss about it and explain to him how badly you want this position. Maybe that would help? Don't know if that would make it better or worse though.

Good luck, make sure you let us know how it goes!!

i am SO pulling for you. it disappoints me that you looked so diligently for a new job, and you found this one which seemed so promising, and you've been treated the way you have there. a transfer seems like it would make the whole experience worth it... i really hope your boss will release you. fingers crossed.
